MY PERFECT TEACHER EXPLAINS KARMA

The complete virtuous action of living in the morality abstaining from the negative karma of ill will has four happy results:

(1) the fully ripened result: You will receive a good rebirth in the body of a happy migrator being in the human or deva realms instead of rebirth in the suffering lower realms.

(2) experiencing the result similar to the previous cause: When you are reborn as a human being in the future, you will not experience seeking what is not beneficial. Other sentient beings will not harm. Your mind will always be very happy and comfortable, free of worry, doubting and fearing that others will try to harm you because of your own ill will. Instead, you will always seeks only what is beneficial, not what is harmful. You will always look for means of livelihood and ways to be happy and enjoy yourself that are beneficent rather than harmful.

For example, you will avoid fishing, hunting, and other entertainment that involve harming others. Ill will results in the wrong concept that sees harmful things as beneficial. Thus, because of this wrong belief, one does not seek what is beneficial but instead seeks what is harmful. For example, many people believe that the activities they engage in for entertainment, enjoyment, and relaxation are beneficial when actually these activities such as drinking alcohol, taking addictive drugs, smoking cigarettes, and so forth only harm themselves and others.

(3) the possessed result: In the future when you are reborn in the human realm, your environment will be free of contagious diseases, colds, harms, fighting, wars, dangerous wild animals such as lions and tigers, harmful animals and insects of all sizes that sting or bite, such as vicious poisonous snakes, scorpions, mosquitoes, fleas, bed bugs, spiders, bees, and lice, vicious harmful spirits, thieves, robbers, and so on. The environment will be free of such things as the unpleasantness of your precious food being discovered and covered by ants, which is the result of either ill will or stealing. So by practicing the morality abstaining from ill will, you will be reborn in a place where these harmful elements do not occur. Or if these things are there, you will not experience their harm. Other beings will not harm you. Thus, your life will be without fears, very happy, healthy, and comfortable.

(4) creating the result similar to the previous cause of living in the morality abstaining from ill will: In future lives you will again be able to collect good karma by living in the morality abstaining from ill will. This means you will be able to stop giving harm to others and to yourself in this way.

The complete virtuous action of living in the morality abstaining from the negative karma of wrong views has four happy results:

(1) the fully ripened result: You will receive a good rebirth in the body of a happy migrator being in the human or deva realms instead of rebirth in the suffering lower realms.

(2) experiencing the result similar to the previous cause: When you are reborn as a human being in the future, you will not experience wrong views, such as being attracted to evil friends, to non-virtuous actions, or to wrong doctrines such as the disbelief in karma and reincarnation. Even though these are reality of life, at the moment you don’t have the clear mind or haven’t yet developed the higher capacity to see your own past karma and your own and others past and future lives. Also you will not become deceptive and cunning at hiding.

You will naturally dislike wrong views as mentioned above. You will be attracted to virtuous actions, good friends, right philosophies. You will naturally gravitate to those things that only develop your own wisdom instead of building more and more mistaken views and concepts and, therefore, more suffering and harm to others, because of leading them on the wrong path. You will have great faith in karma and reincarnation. You will have great interest in actions that benefit others, in the practice of compassion and so forth.

Also you will discover great faith in the Four Noble Truths (True Suffering, True Origin, True Cessation of Suffering, and True Path) and the right view of emptiness. Among the four schools of Buddhist philosophy, you will be especially attracted to the Extremely subtle Prasangika view, the only right view that can completely cut that particular one ignorance that is the root of samsara, thus eradicating all suffering and all the causes of suffering. Because of your strong faith in the Prasangika view, then you will quickly come to fully realize the unmistaken Prasangika view, which will enable you quickly to achieve liberation from all of samsara. Consequently, you will be able to liberate numberless other sentient beings from all the suffering realms of samsara and bring them to enlightenment with the support of bodhicitta, the pure wish to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings.

(3) the possessed result: In the future when you are reborn in the human realm, you will be born in a very wealthy and productive environment. It will not be in a place where products are used, where commodities degenerate or disappear. Also, you will not have the wrong view that mistakes sufferings for pleasures. The biggest problem in life is perceiving suffering as pleasure and then clinging to that. People do many painful and suffering things for money, reputation, and entertainment, but they regard these as pleasures. For example, people see sado-masochistic practices, drug addiction, and drinking alcohol as pleasures and instead of as sufferings. In reality, all samsaric pleasures are suffering, though they may appear as pleasure. Clinging to this misconception is why we are continuously reborn in samsara over and over again.

The result of living in the morality abstaining from wrong views is that you have correct perceptions; therefore, you do not experience these mistakes. You are not hallucinated by seeing suffering as pleasure, and instead realize samsaric suffering as suffering, this helps you to be liberated from that. When you have problems and need help, you will never be unable to find a guide, an object of refuge. You will always be able to find refuge, to find protection in the form of a place or people to help you.

(4) creating the result similar to the previous cause of living in the morality abstaining from wrong views: In future lives you will again be able to continue to practice Dharma and to collect good karma by living in the morality abstaining from wrong views. This means you will be able to stop giving harm to others and to yourself in this way.
